About Scottish Opera
Scottish Opera is Scotland’s national opera company and the largest performing arts organisation in Scotland. This year marks its 60th anniversary of making opera more accessible and enjoyable for all. Scottish Opera was founded by conductor Alexander Gibson in 1962. In 1975 it purchased the Theatre Royal in Glasgow from Scottish Television and reopened it as the first national opera house for Scotland with a production of Die Fledermaus. The organisation is multi award winning, enjoying accolades such as the South Bank Sky Arts Award, a Scottish Award for New Music, Sunday Herald Culture Awards, a Herald Angel, and a 2020 RPS Award. Scottish Opera collaborates with the world’s finest singers and creatives, together with The Orchestra of Scottish Opera and choruses for each opera.
What’s on in Glasgow 2023?
It’s a very special anniversary this year and the organisers have a diverse, dynamic season of performances in store with some familiar faces, new works, and company premiers. Opera Highlights returns between 14th of February and the 25th of March and brings a journey of discovery with an original piano-accompanied production. It is a meticulously curated musical journey which combines repertoire favourites with lesser-known pieces. With music from The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro and The Pearl Fishers and many more, it’s a treasure trove of opera you won’t find anywhere else.
Puccini’s Il Trittico, Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi take residence from 11-25th March, a new arrival for the theatre, directed by world-renowned director Sir David McVicar. A trio of one-act operas of love and loss, Il trittico moves seamlessly from high drama and heart-breaking tragedy to dark comedy. Music Director Stuart Stratford conducts a world-class ensemble cast with many familiar faces on the opera scene in Scotland. The opera runs for an almost record-breaking four hours with two longer-than-usual intervals.
It wouldn’t be an anniversary season without a production of the formidable, and well-known Carmen. This classic opera of jealousy, lust, and life outside the dictates of society has been given a bold update especially to mark its 60th year and is directed by Dane Lam. This show is one showstopper after another with familiar hit melodies such as the Habanera, Flower Aria, and Toreador Song. Tickets start at just £21 with concession tickets for just £10, making it accessible to all. We’re lucky to have Carmen call Glasgow her home on 12, 14th (Matinee) 16, 18 & 20 May 2023.
