What is Pride in Glasgow?
Pride is a celebration of all things LGBTQ+ marking our differences and commemorating our achievements while acknowledging how far we still have to go. Thousands flock to the city to mark the occasion and take part in the festivities which include a march/parade, themed nights, performances and plenty of rainbows. Following on from previous themes Together as One and U=U (2021) and Bi is Beautiful (2022), the 2023 theme is Women of the LGBTQ+ Community and Movement. It celebrates powerful women who were an integral part of the Pride movement such as Marsha P Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Lisa Power MBE, Sian James and Princess Diana. It’s truly an event not to be missed.
Pride Glasgow 2023
We’re excited to see the variety of events announced for this year’s Pride celebrations which keep growing until the last minute. The highlight of the weekend for many is the fantastic Pride parade which has grown in size and popularity in the 26 years since the first march. We expect to see hundreds of people march the street colourfully clad with rainbows, showing their support and pride for all LGBTQ+ people. As well as this magnificent display, there are smaller themed events. Slay Glasgow has several themed nights like DILF Glasgow which promise to be nights of dancing and debauchery. Pride Idol is back and is one of the city’s favourite talent nights. Pride Street Market returns to Barras with a variety of activities including Independent LGBTQ+ traders, food trucks, music, late-night shopping, and more. The Pride Hub is returning over 4 floors of Strathclyde Students Union and University on Saturday the 15th of July as part of the celebration.
Get Involved
Did you know you do not have to register or pay to participate in the Pride Parade? They recognise that Pride was born out of protest and encourage peaceful political participation for everyone no matter their status or social standing. Registration is required by social groups with 10 or more people, commercial organisations, and any group with a float or a banner. Individuals and small groups of 9 or fewer without banners can join the fun without registering. The route of the parade is yet to be announced but every effort is made by police and organisers to ensure it’s uninterrupted. Join in by wearing bright colours and having fun! It is free of charge to join but they ask for a donation from larger commercial organisations, the cost of which goes to offer additional activities and support.
