The Hoppings
The Hoppings is an annual travelling funfair held on the Town Moor in Newcastle upon Tyne, during the last week in June every year. The first fair took place in 1882 in Newcastle, and it has grown in size and popularity since. This year the fair has 400 rides and attractions for all ages and is open for 10 days from 21st until 30th June 2024. Its location on Newcastle Town Moor is ideal to get to on foot or by public transport. It’s a 40-minute walk or just 10 minutes from our accommodation in Newcastle – perfect for an easy commute with plenty to see along the way. There are plenty of places to eat and drink along the way but don’t fill up if you plan to enjoy some of the faster rides!
Attractions
Attractions at this fair will leave you reeling. From thrill-seeking rides to family favourites and high-powered arcade games to traditional funfair favourites, there is something for everyone. Reach new heights with the Star Flyer sending riders nearly 200ft in the air. Reach speeds of 80mph on The Mach Bomber, the UK’s favourite G4 listed attraction or enjoy panoramic views of Newcastle on the famous giant observation wheel. For a more wholesome experience with little ones, try your luck on the hook-a-duck stalls or try to keep your cool on the dodgems. The waltzers will leave you in a tizzy and the ghost train is sure to get your pulse racing. For younger visitors, there are over 100 child-friendly attractions including bouncy castles, slides, spinning teacups, and miniature roller coasters.
Important Info
The funfair will be open from June 21st until June 30th inclusive. Doors will be open from 1 pm to 11 pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and opening hours will vary midweek so it’s advised to check their website before you set out. The site is free to enter for all visitors but rides will cost between £1.50 to £5 per ride. Family discounts are often available, ask at individual rides. The site is dog-friendly, and visitors can bring their own food and drink. The onsite car park costs £4 for the entire day and can be pre-booked in advance online. They advise pre-booking the car park as it can be busy and there is limited parking available in the area. Access is via the Grandstand Road entrance near the Blue House roundabout. Pedestrians can enter The Hoppings via the main entrance on the Great North Road, via the car parking area on Grandstand Road, or from Claremont Road via Exhibition Park. Bus numbers 11, 21, 306, X1, X45, and X77 and the green and yellow metro lines have routes that pass near the Town Moor.
