The Beatles Story:
Located on the world-famous Albert Dock, the Beatles Story is one of the main Beatles-themed attractions in Liverpool. They have lots of original memorabilia on display (including the original Strawberry Fields gate) and replicas of many famous Beatles themed locations like Abbey Road Studios and the Cavern Club. Some of the fascinating pieces include original instruments & clothing, John Lennon’s Spectacles, rare photography and handwritten lyrics. For a hardcore fan, a few hours will be well-spent in the largest display of Beatles memorabilia in the world.
The Beatles Statue:
If you want a picture with ‘the lads’, we’re afraid you’re a little too late! The next best thing comes in the form of the four life-sized statues on Pier head. The iconic statue is based on a photoshoot taken in 1963 of the band walking along the Mersey and the placement coincides with the 50 year anniversary of the band’s last gig played in Liverpool. The details in the statue are excellent, down to the acorns in John’s hand (cast from the ones he planted in Denver with Yoko Ono). It’s easily one of the cities most popular selfie spots – when you visit you’ll know why!
Cavern Club:
When in Liverpool, make sure to pop into the world-famous Cavern Club, where the Beatles started out. The Beatles gave their first performance ever at The Cavern Club on 9th February 1961 and were picked up and signed by Brian Epstein after he caught one of their gigs in the venue. The club is filled with Beatles memorabilia and its brick-vaulted cellars have a very special feeling contained within. The Cavern Club is still a working music venue which has music playing almost constantly and not just Beatles tributes!
Childhood Homes:
For the truly hardcore fans, and there are many, you can actually take a tour of the childhood homes of two of the Fab Four. The childhood homes of Paul McCartney and John Lennon are open to the public, by pre-arranged tour only. Being able to walk around the actual rooms where the lads ate, slept and practiced is a surreal experience, you really feel like you’re in the presence of royalty. You’ll need to book a guided tour that also includes a trip to the inspiration behind one of their biggest hits, Penny Lane.
Penny Lane:
Speaking of which, Penny Lane is a real place that inspired a huge hit for the band in the 60s. John and Paul used to meet on this street to take the bus into town to practise and socialise. The song also mentions the sights and characters that they recalled from childhood in the city. While the song is named Penny Lane, it’s actually a reference to the Penny Lane Bus Station (which is since gone), next to ‘the shelter in the middle of a roundabout’. The shelter has since been turned into a café called Sgt. Peppers Bistro named after the album the song was released on.
