History of Hogmanay
Hogmanay is what we Scots call New Year’s Eve. No-one celebrates New Years with quite as much passion and enthusiasm as Scotland does and our Hogmanay celebration is famous across the world. The origins of Hogmanay reach back to the Vikings celebrating Winter Solstice with wild parties and plenty of food and drink. The word Hogmanay is thought to have first been used following Mary Queen of Scots’ return to Scotland from France in 1561. Although it is not 100% certain, it was first recorded in the dictionary around that time and comes from the French word ‘hoginane’ – meaning gala day. No matter where it came from, Scotland’s biggest celebration of the year always guarantees a warm welcome and a fantastic night, wither in person or on screen!
Hogmanay in Glasgow 2020/2021
Hogmanay will look different this year. We would usually have exciting nights of dancing, street parties, fireworks and events in Glasgow, but this year, we can expect a more low key celebration. Many of the top bars, pubs and restaurants will still be hosting glamourous New Years Eve dinners, complete with delicious food and plenty of bubbles to help you count down. Book your table in your favourite restaurants as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Places fill up very fast so don’t leave it until the last minute. There may not be a big public fireworks display at midnight but many locals will be letting off their own fireworks, so a good vantage point of the city is a must.
Festive Lights in Glasgow
If you’re looking for something festive to help you enjoy NYE, take a stroll to the gorgeous George Square and admire the traditional festive decorations including the famous Christmas tree, lights and crib. The city has installed a new festive lighting installation at Glasgow City Chambers, illuminating the iconic building with festive colours, Christmas lights and impressive laser displays.
