What constitutes a traditional pub in Britain? A traditional pub is often where a central part of a town or village, especially in places with limited alternatives. The great British pub is not just a place to drink, it’s a place where communities come together to enjoy a few ‘bevvies’ and a catch-up, often enjoying live music or sports being shown on TV. Traditional pubs don’t have chrome bars, floor to ceiling windows or extensive cocktail menus. They stick with tried and trusted décor and drinks, which is exactly what their locals want. Here are some of our favourite traditional pubs Liverpool city.
1. The Roscoe Head
One of the best pubs in Liverpool is less than 20-minutes from PREMIER SUITES and is worth the walk. Opened in 1870, The Roscoe Head is one of the few independent alehouses that has survived the gentrification of Liverpool pubs; you won’t find Wetherspoons taking over here any time soon. Within the four cosy rooms, you’ll find locals from every walk of life enjoying some excellent beer and company. The pub has been endorsed by CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale in the UK) so you know you’ll find an excellent pint. As far as décor, the tiled floors and a hardwood bar add to the friendly charm and atmosphere of the pub.
2. Doctor Duncan’s
This excellent traditional pub is on the doorstep of the popular Lime Street Station, the perfect welcome or a great farewell from Liverpool! Based on St Johns Lane, the pub has beautifully intricate woodwork, comfortable leather booths and decadent high ceilings, giving it a grand ol’ feel. The pub was named after the first chief medical officer of Liverpool who was also a passionate campaigner against poor living conditions in Victorian times; it even has a Victorian pharmacy cabinet. Here you’ll find some of the best real ale in all of Liverpool’s pubs, great chats with locals and visitors and friendly staff who are always able to recommend something to suit you.
3. Baltic Fleet
Another traditional pub, moderately untouched by technology (we couldn’t even find a website!) is the Baltic Fleet, down in the Baltic Triangle opposite Wapping Dock. It is Liverpool’s only brew-pub and offers a welcoming atmosphere and a nautical theme. Their award-winning beers are brewed on the premises and you won’t get a fresher pint. If you fancy a cosy drink with friends, as a couple or a quiet drink alone, you can pull a stool over their log-burning stove. They also serve a small menu of traditional food like a hot bowl of Scouse with pickled red cabbage. Delicious!
4. The Belvedere Arms
Just five stops away on the bus, The Belvedere Arms is a must-visit, especially for Beatles fans. Once a John Lennon haunt, when he studied across the road in the University of Liverpool, this old-school Georgian pub serves beers from local microbreweries as well as the usual suspects. It is a cosy two-roomed community pub set inside a grade II listed building which retains many original fixtures and interesting etched glass features. You’ll find a mixed clientele, including the odd student, members of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and locals looking for a pint and a chat.
5. The Lion Tavern
Another traditional pub in Liverpool, the Lion Tavern has undergone a huge 300,000-pound makeover in recent times but has luckily retained all of its best characteristic features. Design and interior highlights include the art nouveau tiled dado, the timber and etched glass bar and carved screens in the front windows. The Lion is the oldest building continuously used as a pub in Liverpool. The atmosphere, like most of the best pubs in Liverpool, is warm and welcoming and you’ll always find some decent banter with the locals at the bar.
