Zandvoort – 40 minutes’ drive
What started as a small fishing port in the 1100s, Zandvoort is now a bustling seaside resort town in North Holland and one of the major beach resorts in the country. Spend a day on a sun lounger enjoying a cocktail and a bite to eat from one of the many beachside bars & restaurants along the seafront. The beach is bordered by some impressive sand dunes in Zuid-Kennemerland National Park and the city is also home to Circuit Zandvoort, The Netherlands premier motor racing circuit.
Bloemendaal – 35 minutes’ drive
A short hop from the centre of the city, Bloemendaal is Amsterdam’s party suburb, our answer to Ibiza. Bloemendaal is the countries most affluent suburb and has everything you need from a trip to the coast including shops, boutiques, cafes & bars, villas and sun loungers and a very impressive natural surround with lots of native wildlife to admire. You’ll find some of the countries best nightlife here and are guaranteed a good time with friendly locals in beach clubs like Woodstock69 and Vroeger.
Wijk aan Zee – 40 minutes’ drive
Did you know you could surf close to Amsterdam? Wijk aan Zee is the best surf beach in the area with the clearest water along the coast. If you’re a beginner, there are always surfing lessons on offer in the surf schools along the seafront and you can spend the rest of the day exploring this lovely traditional Dutch village. Its also home to an excellent beach club called Timboektoe where you can relax with a drink, enjoy a BBQ, or dance the night away.
Ijmuiden – 35 minutes’ drive
Aside from the world-class beach and super clubs, the North Sea swell offers ideal conditions for a more adventurous break near the water. One of the more urban beach retreats, Ijmuiden is located at the mouth of the River UJ and is a popular spot for water sports in the city. You can try your hand at many water-based activities including kitesurfing, paddleboarding and blokarting (think go-karting on the sand). If that’s not your idea of fun, you can lay on the sandy beach with your favourite book and admire the gigantic cruise & cargo ships as they pass peacefully. It’s a great day out for all the family.
Sloterplas Lake – 13 minutes’ drive
Aside from the beach, there are plenty of places to enjoy water sports in Amsterdam. In the Nieuw-West neighbourhood, Sloterplas Lake offers crystal-clear water that’s perfect for sailing and water sports. Visit the centre to sign up for lessons and hire any equipment you might need for an exciting day out. It’s perfect for a family-friendly day out with activities to keep the children busy and plenty of sand and grass for parents to relax and keep watch.
Pllek – 22 minutes’ drive
Pllek is a buzzing beachfront strip that’s full of art exhibitions, cultural events and the famous PLLEK Restaurant. It’s a cool hangout spot for students & groups that still has the opportunity to swim in the River IJ if you wish. There is often live music playing and you’ll always find a spot to crash with a beer and a burger.
