Van Gogh Early Life

Vincent Van Gogh is best known as a tortured artist whose works are familiar and admired worldwide. Vincent was born on March 30 1853, in Zundert, The Netherlands. He was the eldest of six children of a Protestant pastor and had an unremarkable childhood until he was apprenticed to The Hague branch of the art dealers Goupil and Co. He moved to London in 1873, then to Paris in 1867 within which time his outlook on life darkened after his love for a woman was spurned in 1874. He moved to The Netherlands and back to Belgium where in the winter of 1879–80 he experienced the first great spiritual crisis of his life and gave away all his worldly goods. After this time he focused more on his art, perfecting his craft and becoming, after his death, one of the most notorious artists of his generation.

The Art of Van Gogh

The artist is generally considered the greatest of the post-impressionist artists after Rembrandt van Rijn. His artistic career was extremely short, lasting only 10 years from 1880 to 1890 within which he painted 900 paintings, many of which he was in institutions or suffering from mental illness and hardship. The striking colour, unique brushwork, and contoured forms of his work influenced the rise of Expressionism in modern art. Van Gogh’s art became increasingly popular after his death on July 29, 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris, France. His works continue to sell for record-breaking sums, and he has become the centre of many blockbuster touring exhibitions. Because of his well-documented life and letter writing, he has become known as the quintessential tortured artist.

Beyond Van Gogh is just one of the touring exhibitions of the famous artists, arguably the most successful and well-known.
