Walking tours
Another unusual fact about Bristol is that the infamous pirate Blackbeard once had a hideaway under St Marys Church in Redcliffe and his original birthplace still stands on the harbourside. Food
As of October 2017, Bristol is home to four Michelin-star restaurants Casamia, The Pony & Trap, Paco Tapas and Wilks. Local arts
Did you know that world-famous graffiti/street artist, Banksy, comes from Bristol? Although his identity remains unknown to this day, the artist has amassed a huge online following, has 100s of exhibitions dedicated to him each year and his prints now sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds. Luckily Bristol is where is perfected his craft and many of his works can be viewed with a short stroll around the city.
Local pubs
Not exactly a hidden gem, but something close to our heart and our home, Old Market is a bohemian area which contains many bars, shops, restaurants and nightclubs. The area is steeped in history and contains over 60 listed and historically significant buildings among which is a former courthouse, now a pub. Old Market is well-known for its night-life and for being gay & LGBT friendly with many dedicated gay-bars dotted around the square.
Local History
While in Bristol, soak in some of the local historical sites too. St Mary’s Church in Redcliffe is an 800-year old masterpiece in Gothic architecture and contains some really impressive 18th-century ironwork, beautiful stained glass and a world-famous organ. The church is situated on the edge of the red cliffs, floating above the harbour. It is well worth a visit, definitely one for the Bristol bucket list!
