Christmas in Birmingham

If you’re planning a trip to Birmingham around Christmas, you are spoiled for choice with Christmas- themed activities. The city really comes alive at this time of the year. We’ve put together a few of the highlights to get you in the festive mood.

Polar Express

The Polar Express is coming back!

We are very excited that this magical experience returning, departing from Birmingham’s Moor Street from Sunday – Thursday from 29th November to 23rd December. Arrive to the festively decorated Moor Street where the conductor will invite you on-board and dancing chefs and waiters will serve you cookies and hot chocolate. Then sit back and enjoy a re-enactment of the Chris Van Allsburg classic, Polar Express. This is such a fun Christmas activity for the whole family.

Christmas Market

Have you ever been to a German Christmas Market? If not, you can visit the worlds largest one (outside of Germany and Austria- obviously!) right here in Birmingham. This huge market attracts a whopping 5.5 million visitors a year and is packed to the brim with festive stalls and traditional German food, drink and international crafts and gifts. It opens all the way up to December 23rd so you have plenty of time to visit.

Ice Skating & the Big Wheel

Another annual tradition of ours is the Ice Rink and Big Wheel, which will be based on New Canal Street and opens right through Christmas into late January. Practice your professional pirouettes or learn to skate for the first time with a visit to the finest festive attraction in Birmingham. Year on year voted the best outdoor skate rink in the UK, this year they have decided to put a roof on things to ensure everyone enjoys the experience regardless of our unpredictable weather. Afterwards, take a ride on the Big Wheel to enjoy some of the finest views of the city. It’s an ideal first date!

Christmas Concert

This year our Christmas concert will take place in Symphony Hall and will feature music, dance, lights, spectacle and it wouldn’t be Christmas without some snow! This year’s host is none other than Girls Aloud star Kimberly Walsh and the nations favourite dancing couples, straight from Strictly, Anton du Beke and Erin Boag. They will be joined on stage by fabulous dancers, talented singers, a full show-band and the London Concert Orchestra. This spectacular show is not to be missed especially for those die-hard Christmas enthusiasts.

New Years Eve

We all know Christmas doesn’t finish on the 25th, we still have a great New Years Celebration to look forward to. The town comes alive on this very special night with every pub, club and restaurant in the city full of happy and excited customers. There is so much to choose from in the city, depending how you want to spend the countdown. Try a 70’s and 80’s night complete with an Abba tribute in Custard Factory for some old school boogie!
