What is it about film that makes it one of the most important and immersive forms of storytelling? Films, in the form of TV, movies and other visual means, provide entertainment and historical value. They make it possible to experience emotions and a societies culture in a consumable way engaging our visual and audiological senses better than any other medium. Glasgow Film Festival, one of the leading UK film festivals, returns to celebrate all things film from 26 February to 8 March across the city.
Glasgow Film Festival
Glasgow are delighted to be the host of one of the worlds friendliest film festivals a wide-ranging programme that celebrates every corner of world cinema. The festival has a tradition of promoting and representing new talent and ensuring the very best submissions are given a national and international platform. It’s a must-do for lovers of movies and a rare opportunity to see productions from unknown artists and writers that you may not get to see in conventional cinemas. Screenings are often attended by producers and executives who could help finance future projects or give helpful advice to hopefuls.
The Festival puts a particular emphasis on Scottish film, giving our local artists and producers a chance to have their work shown on a big screen. The Scottish Showcase 2022 will take place from Wednesday 2 to Sunday 13 March in the beautiful Glasgow Film Theatre, from our online player Glasgow Film At Home (GFAH) and, for the first time ever, in cinema venues across the UK. Support local artists, producers, writers and more by buying tickets for one of the many screenings throughout the festival.
The festival is working to be as inclusive as possible with captioned screenings, autism and dementia-friendly screenings and a variety of accessible venues to choose from. Browse the wide selection of movies and book tickets on their website.

Doubling for many international locations like New York, Philadelphia and even Gotham City, Glasgow has been on the big screen more times than you realise. The city offers a variety of filming locations and backgrounds with some of the UK’s finest architecture, including a large number of Grade I & II listed buildings. You’ll find everything from beautiful period locations, modern cityscapes, beautiful beaches and rural villages within a few miles of the city.
Glasgow has been used in many films and shows including the hit TV show Outlander where the University of Glasgow was the setting for many scenes in the fantastic historical drama. The Flash, the fifth Indiana Jones movie, World War Z, Under The Skin, Outlaw King, The Wife, Hobbs & Shaw, Outlander, Succession, and Still Game are just some of the popular movies and shows which were shot in our beautiful city. Along with Edinburgh, Glasgow was the second city for the filming of the classic 1996 black comedy-drama Trainspotting. In 2022, Glasgow is being transformed into a dark, wintry Gotham City as filming takes place for the upcoming Batgirl movie so keep an eye out for our iconic landmarks on the big screen.
