What is the Low Emission Zone in Glasgow?
Harmful vehicle emissions from cars and vans account for around 10% of global COâ‚‚ emissions. Toxic air pollutants pose different risks to health depending on the specific pollutant, including contributing to the occurrence of cancer and harm to the nervous system and brain. We need to reduce the levels of harmful vehicle emissions in Glasgow City Centre, ensuring the health of future generations and the protection of our local environment. Glasgow’s LEZ was approved by Scottish Ministers on 19 May 2022 and was formally introduced on 31 May 2022. General LEZ enforcement started on 1 June 2023. All vehicles entering the city centre zone area must now meet the less-polluting emission standards or face a penalty charge.
Where is the Low Emission Zone Glasgow?
Glasgow Low Emission Zone is approximately one square mile in size. It covers an area of the city centre bounded by the M8 motorway to the north and west, the River Clyde to the south and Saltmarket/High Street to the east. How Do I Avoid Charges
You cannot pay to enter the Low Emission Zone in Glasgow. If a non-compliant vehicle is detected in Glasgow’s LEZ, a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) will be issued to the registered keeper of that vehicle. These fees range from £60 for a first offence to £480 for subsequent offences. There are some exemptions to Glasgow’s LEZ. Fully electric vehicles meet LEZ requirements in Scotland due to the low (or zero) emissions from these vehicles. Some hybrid models also meet these strict standards but it’s best to check your car’s registration on the official vehicle checker. Motorbikes and mopeds are not included in the current LEZ schemes and no restrictions apply. Permanent residents within the LEZ can apply for a grace period of exemption. Some blue badge vehicles are exempt but need to be preregistered. Vehicles registered to a residential property within the zone area have until 1 June 2024 to meet LEZ requirements. The grace period is not applied automatically and must be applied for and obtained before entering the LEZ.
