About The Great North Run
The Great North Run is the second largest half marathon in the world, taking place annually in North East England in September. Participants run from the starting point in Newcastle City Centre to the beautiful UK coastline in South Shields. The first run was arranged and coordinated by Brendan Foster former Olympic 10,000 m bronze medallist turned BBC Sport commentator. Regular runners of the Great North Run will remember two main uphill battles to tackle on race day, including The Felling Bypass climb, which is tougher than it looks, climbing 120 ft over a mile and a half. This year’s run will take place on Sunday 11th September, and we can’t wait to welcome runners from all over the world to our accommodation in Newcastle.
Great North Run 2022
Last year, the run started and finished in Newcastle but this September, after kicking off in the city centre as always, it will cross the Tyne Bridge and from Gateshead. This year sees a return to a point-to-point race with the traditional finish line in South Shields with the finish line at the coast. Whether you are a supporter or a runner, the finish line is a truly exciting and emotional place to meet family and friends. You can also grab a post-race drink and some well-deserved fish & chips while you enjoy the stunning view along the final mile.
Getting Here
Newcastle and South Shields are both packed with cars on race day, making it hard to navigate the streets or find parking. If you’re travelling to Newcastle on 11th September as a participant or part of a finish line celebration, we’d recommend using public transport to get here. Leave plenty of time to get to the race as it’s a guaranteed busy day with plenty of road closures. Nexus, Stagecoach, Arriva and Go North East have teamed up to offer a simple multi-use travel ticket for £6, which will be valid on Metro, any bus service, and the Shields Ferry for the day of the Great North Run. You can buy these handy tickets at the Metro station ticket machines or online in advance of arrival.
Junior & Mini Great North Run
The UK’s largest half marathon just got a little bigger with the addition of the Junior & Mini Great North Run which sees thousands of excited, happy children racing around the Quayside. The Junior and Mini Great North run is back on Saturday 10 September and entries are now open for all ages. Join the official mascot Tyney the Tortoise who will be meeting, greeting, and taking plenty of pictures. There will be plenty of games to play, competitions to win and lots of food and drink options. Participants each receive a Tyney t-shirt and a goodie bag so they feel extra welcome. It’s a great day out for all of the family.
