Spring has officially sprung! Newcastle is filled with the smell of freshly cut grass and everywhere you turn you’ll see blossoming daffodils. The children are excited about Easter break, but parents aren’t as enthusiastic. It can be tiring and costly thinking of ways to entertain them when they’re off school for the fortnight but a trip to Newcastle could be just the trick. We’ve put together a list of exciting things to do over Easter Break with your family.
Â
Newcastle Puppetry Festival
From 6th – 14th April this year, Newcastle becomes a town of ‘Moving Parts’ when the Puppetry Festivals arrives. The opening weekend celebration on Northumberland Street will showcase the free large outdoor puppetry acts and kicks off 9 days of performances, films, master classes, talks, networking events, live music shows. Another free event is the ‘Puppetry for Children Day’ in the Ouseburn on Saturday 13 April, which will include shows, activities and performances for all the family. The festival takes place over 6 central locations so check their official website to make sure you’re not missing the best they have to offer.

Life Science Centre
While a break from school is good for little minds, we don’t want them getting bored with the lack of stimulation. Take a visit to the Life Science Centre and check out their very cool interactive Kitchen Science Show during Easter. Science is often confined to a professional setting like a lab but there are so many experiments that can be done at home in your kitchen. This award-winning visitor attraction also has exhibitions on space, technology, nature and even robots, you could spend a day learning and exploring.
Â
Seven Stories
If you really want to spark their imaginations, Seven Stories Bookshop have readings of some of their favourite childhood books and stories over the Easter holidays. Seven Stories is one of the largest independent, specialist children’s bookshops in the UK and this year are celebrating the 30th anniversary of a book that’s loved all over the world, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. They have even arranged a real-life Bear Hunt in Ouseburn’s own Victoria Tunnel. Participants are encouraged to come dressed for the adventure and enjoy some craft and fun back in the shop afterwards.
