Cathedral Square
One of many magnificent squares in Glasgow, Cathedral Square is a photographers or architecture-lovers dream. As well as the beautiful gothic Glasgow Cathedral, one of the oldest buildings in the city, it also has an interesting past. Cathedral House was built in 1896 as a hostel for female prisoners released from nearby Duke Street Prison. The prison was infamous for its terrible living conditions and housed, and executed, some of Scotland’s worst criminals – some of whom are said to still visit from the beyond!
Great Western Road
Great Western Road is over 3 miles long and the longest road in Glasgow. Along the road, you’ll see the magnificent St Mary’s Cathedral which dates back to the 19th century. To the north, you’ll find the magnificent Kibble Palace, a glass greenhouse inside Glasgow Botanic Gardens once owned by eccentric Victorian John Kibble. It was moved to its present site in 1873 and was originally used as a concert hall and meeting place with a condition from Kibble that he could still use the beautiful greenhouse to entertain his guests.
West George Street
If you want to stay in the heart of the city, George Square and the nearby West George Street are an ideal choice. The Malmaison Hotel, less than 10-minutes’ walk from our serviced apartments in Glasgow was once a Greek Orthodox Church designed by architect John Stephen and built in 1838. The building, like many surrounding it, were part of a bourgeois suburb with neo-classical architecture, some of the most striking of the generation. The church was converted into a boutique hotel in 1994, retaining the stunning Greek Revival façade and is now one of the most striking buildings in the city.
Hope Street
For many, when you think about Glasgow, you conjure images of the gorgeous architecture and buildings of Hope Street. That’s because the street is often used as a filming location for TV & Hollywood blockbusters. In 1895, before it became illegal, the main draw of the street was cockfighting which drew large crowds but today you’re more likely to find tourists wandering around and admiring the many figures and sculptures overhead, attached to the red stone buildings.
High Street
One of the oldest streets in Glasgow, High Street was formerly the cities main thoroughfare in Medieval times. Before the West End was even dreamed of, the street was the home of Glasgow University and was a bustling area full of workers, students, and shoppers. Standing at the foot of High Street is the towering Old Tolbooth Steeple, all that is left of the original Tolbooth buildings which contained the town hall, court, and jail. This was the location that many thieves, murderers and alleged witches met their end. Today the main attraction on the street is the mural of St Mungo at the northern end.
St Vincent Street
If you love the hustle and bustle of city living, enjoying restaurants, bars, and music venues, then St Vincent Street is for you. The street was once home to the Edwardian Anchor Building built in 1905 and HQ for the Anchor Line Shipping company. If you were looking for tickets to set sail from Glasgow to discover the rest of the world, you’d first visit Anchor Line to buy your tickets. As you pass the building, make sure to keep your eyes up, looking out for the buildings nautical theme with seaweed, shells, and sailors both inside and outside. It’s also home to the notorious music venue King Tuts.
