The first Scotland Loves Local Week takes place from 28 August to 3 September 2023 and we’re proud to support the campaign. The aim is to champion the Scotland Loves Local message, putting localism at the heart of a stronger, future for Scotland’s towns, big and small. Scotland Loves Local
This week, the inaugural Scotland Loves Local celebration, will shine a spotlight on the people and places where hard work and innovation are delivering projects that will make our towns and communities fit for the future. Clubs, councils, and organisations are encouraged to organise and take part in activities in their area that promote the local area and its economy. The week is organised by Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP), the organisation behind the Love Local campaign. Scotland Loves Local even has an awards ceremony taking place to recognise and reward remarkable dedication, innovation, and commitment towards shaping a sustainable, successful future with localism at its heart. Keep an eye on local groups’ websites and social media for information on local events happening in Edinburgh for this special week.
Why Support Local
Supporting local has always been important but never more so than in a cost-of-living crisis. Local businesses don’t only build a stronger economy, they also help to build a stronger community. Relationships between small businesses, their customers, and other small businesses create a welcoming and supportive community, increasing the productivity and happiness of its residents. Supporting small businesses means employing local people and putting money back into the Scottish economy instead of sending it to a multinational. If we don’t support small, local businesses, we may not have many to choose from in the future. Local businesses are the measure of a city and if we have none left, a lot of the identity and character of Edinburgh will be lost.
Shop Local Edinburgh
One of the parts of Edinburgh that we are most proud of is our independent shopping scene. While you will find all of the high street and high-end brands around the city, you’ll also find a great selection of local and unique shops and stores, independently owned and run. Many of these shops, stores, stalls, markets, and outlets are dotted around the city, down cobbled laneways and off the beaten track but you are sure to find unique and unusual items you’d never find on the high street. Scotland Loves Local Gift Card is a novel way to keep your money locally for as long as possible. You can buy vouchers online or on the high street and use them exclusively in approved, locally-owned businesses. They’re a great gift for a local or loved one and there are hundreds of retailers to choose from.
Things To Do In Edinburgh
Supporting local doesn’t just mean spending your money in the right place, although that really helps! You can support locals by visiting local attractions and promoting Scotland on your social media or to your friends. Visiting local museums, especially smaller more unique kind, boosts their popularity and visibility, encouraging further investment. Try the Museum of Childhood, Museum of Edinburgh, and The Peoples Story to start. Enjoying local walks and hikes encourages government to invest in improving the infrastructure and accessibility of the suburbs. Visit small businesses and support local producers like Maison de Moggy, the Cameo Cinema and The Stand Comedy Club to keep them alive and enjoy a more unusual visit to the city.
