Scotland’s largest city has a certain charm and an array of Insta-worthy places to visit and things to do. Glasgow attractions include beautiful architecture, notable art collections and an abundance of green space. Paired with the vibrant atmosphere and the colourful residents, Glasgow is a fantastic place to visit and a great place to take some unique pictures.
1. Glasgow Cathedral
Glasgow Cathedral is not only one of the most beautiful structures in the city but is also the site where our Patron Saint, St. Mungo, built his first ever church – his tomb is still on display inside the cathedral. It’s one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the city.
2.Kelvingrove Museum
One of the most popular attractions in Glasgow, Kelvingrove Museum is a world-class museum in a truly impressive building. The inside has been extensively refurbished, and the outside is a perfectly preserved example of Baroque architecture. It comes as a surprise to some but the side facing into the park of the same name is grander and more ornate than the more visible back end.Â
3.Modern Art @ GOMAÂ
GOMA, or Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art, is Scotland’s most visited modern art gallery and an impressive and imposing Neoclassical building on Royal Exchange Square. It’s iconic stone pillars once housed a library and when the building was returned to the city in 1996, it was converted into a gallery space.
4. Mural Tour
Not all of Glasgow’s attractions are old buildings, some are more modern works of street art. Take a Mural Tour to enjoy some of the most iconic outdoor art in the country, featuring artists like Rogue One and Smug. Make sure to visit the murals of one of our national treasures Billy Connolly, painted to celebrate his 70th birthday.
5.Glasgow Necropolis
An oasis of calm amidst a concrete jungle, The Necropolis is one of Glasgow’s many green spaces and holds the remains of over 50,000 people. It may seem a little morbid to have a graveyard as a top Glasgow attraction but once you experience the peace and learn some of the history of the place, you’ll see why it’s so popular.
6.Peoples Palace & Winter GardensÂ
Set in the oldest park in the city, Glasgow Green, The Peoples Palace is one of our most Instagrammable spots. It is home to a collection of objects, photographs, prints and film which give a unique view into how Glaswegians lived, worked and played in years gone by to the present day. Enjoy the heat and botany inside the gorgeous and absolutely enormous greenhouse.
7.Provands Lordship
This house/museum is the oldest residence in Glasgow and one of only four remaining medieval buildings left standing. Inside you’ll find period furniture, portraits and trinkets from times gone by. Make sure to visit the St Nicholas medicinal herb garden on the grounds before you leave.
8.City Chambers
The interior of the City Chambers is straight out of a fairy-tale, everything from the ornate mosaic floors and ceilings to the antique marble staircase, which is the largest in Western Europe. The building is still in use as a city hall type building, hosting regular state visits from travelling dignitaries and celebration banquets.
9.Riverside MuseumÂ
An architectural wonder before you even step in the door, this contemporary building is Glasgow’s award-winning transport museum. With over 3,000 objects on display, everything from skateboards to locomotives, you won’t get bored! As the name mentions it’s along the River Clyde which is a delight in the sunshine.
10. Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre
Of all of the attractions in Glasgow, Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre is easily one of the most impressive. Hundreds of pieces of scrap and carved figures move in perfect harmony and synchronicity to haunting music to portray funny and tragic stories of the human spirit as it comes to terms with life and death. These incredible works of moving art are something that will stay with you for years to come.
