The best things to do in Birmingham in January

We can’t guarantee good weather in Birmingham during the winter, in fact, you can almost be sure you’ll see more rain than sun when you visit! However, we can guarantee that the city stays vibrant and exciting regardless of the weather. If you’re looking for an excellent Winter visit to Birmingham, read our guide to the best things to do in Birmingham in January. If you’re looking for excellent value for money, a great location and plenty of space from your accommodation, look no further than PREMIER SUITES serviced apartments Birmingham.

Wine & Dine

While eating and drinking are year-round treats, there’s something extra special about an English pub with great food during the cold Winter months. If you’re very lucky you might even find one with a fire to cosy up to while it rains outside. One of our favourite, and less than a 10-minute walk away, is the Spotted Dog pub run for 31 years by the friendly landlady Anne. Fireplaces are an integral part of the pub with people flocking to get a seat next to one of their two blazing fires and enjoy a hearty supper and a pint.

Shopping

Shopping in Birmingham is second to none. Whether you’re looking for a high-end favourite, designer boutiques or unique vintage and second-hand clothing, the city is a shopper’s paradise. The iconic Bullring & Grand Central have recently merged to make one giant 200-strong centre with the flagship store John Lewis being the main attraction. For designer, high-end clothing and accessories, the luxurious Mailbox Birmingham is the place to be or if you’re looking for some serious bling, the Jewellery Quarter is ideal for choosing a one of a kind piece or that all-important diamond ring. Retail therapy isn’t just good for the soul, it keeps you out of the rain too!

Winter walk

With 100+ rainy days here every year, we believe there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing! If you’d prefer to keep active, regardless of the weather, why not enjoy one of the many Winter walks around the city & beyond. You could drive 30 minutes to Licky Hills or Sutton Park but for some urban beauty, take a long walk along the Birmingham Canals. They’re dotted with bars, shops and restaurants so you may not get far without being distracted!

Big Wheel & Ice Skate

With the excitement of Christmas fading fast after 25th, we’re lucky the city council likes to keep the festive spirit going well into January. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the big wheel this year, you still can until 12th January. We’d highly recommend bringing a flask and a couple of warm blankets while you gaze at the lights from the best viewpoint in the city. Same goes if you want to chance your arm (no pun intended!) at ice skating. Step out for the first time, practice what you’ve learned or perfect your pirouette in our festive ice rink, just 15-minutes walking from your serviced apartments in Birmingham.

National Sea Life Centre

While many of us warm-blooded creatures perish in the cold of the Winter months, for many creatures it’s a natural habitat. Visit the new Penguin Ice Adventure in the National Sealife Centre this year to watch the mischievous penguins making themselves at home. With indoor temperatures of just 8 degrees you’ll need to wrap up warm, but our black and white friends will feel right at home. The Sealife Centre do fantastic work for the conservation of many at-risk species and it’s a great day out for couples, friends and families.
