With a gradual return to what we now know as ‘the new normal’ we think it’s a great time to remind ourselves of the best ways to keep ourselves safe as we return to work. Our team in PREMIER SUITES serviced apartments Ballsbridge have worked so hard throughout the pandemic, proving a safe and comfortable place to live for essential workers and travellers, often including medical personnel. We are now comfortable with our safer environment and want to share some tips with guests who may be anxious about returning to the workplace.
Social Distance
It’s been the buzzword of the past 18-months and it’s easy to fall into old habits, but it is so important to keep your distance from your colleagues where possible. Keeping a two-metre distance from others reduces your risk of picking up Covid-19 and any other virus including the common cold & flu. If you cannot keep a two-metre distance from your colleagues while in the office, at your desk or in your workplace, you can wear a mask even if guidelines say you don’t have to. Don’t be shy about asking colleagues to take a step back if you feel you are too close together or take a step back yourself.
Mask Wearing
While guidelines are constantly improving to keep us safe, one thing is for sure. Masks reduce the spread of Covid-19 by putting a physical barrier between your nose & mouth and the breath of another person, reducing the viral load passing between you. Masks should be worn when you’re in a crowded setting, when you can’t be at least 1 metre from others and in rooms with poor ventilation. Even if guidelines say you don’t need to wear a mask, if you feel unsafe or uncertain, there is no harm putting one on for peace of mind.
Personal Hygiene
Personal hygiene has always been important but not taken as seriously as it should have. As well as our day to day hygiene –showering daily and keeping our clothes clean-we need to be more mindful of our coughs and sneezes. If you cough or sneeze, do so into a clean tissue which should be disposed of immediately. Frequent hand washing and sanitising is essential to stop the spread in the workplace and should be practised before & after using the bathroom, after sneezing or touching your face and after touching a ‘frequent touch point’ like a door handle, fridge door, coffee machine buttons etc.
Use Your Judgement
If you feel unwell, it’s your responsibility to protect your co-workers by staying at home. Let your employer know as soon as possible and do not present to the workplace if you feel ill. If you have any symptoms of Covid-19, ring your local health centre or GP and request a test. You should isolate until you receive your test results and for 10 further days if you test positive. Let your employer know your status so they can take steps to protect your co-workers.
Shared Responsibility
Your employer must take steps to protect staff from this deadly virus and prevent its spread among colleagues. Some steps that they could take are:
- Enforcing all government and health advice in a timely manner.
- Increase cleaning in public areas.
- Staggered arrival & leaving times for staff.
- Providing a quarantine room with hand sanitiser & PPE in case of emergency.
- Ensuring a safe distance between desks.
- Allowing employees to work from home where possible.
- Listening to employee concerns and amending processes where possible.
