What is Dublin famous for?

As Ireland’s capital city and the home of the primary airport in the country, Dublin attracts millions of visitors every year. There are experiences, attractions and hidden gems on every corner but what is Dublin actually famous for? We’ve put together a list of our greatest achievements and attractions, many of which are a short distance from PREMIER SUITES, your ideal business accommodation in Dublin.

Guinness

Nothing beats a pint of Guinness and when it comes to the best places in the world to enjoy a pint of the black stuff – Dublin is obviously top of the list. The Guinness Storehouse and Brewery Tour is, and has always been, in Dublin and is a working brewery producing 10 million pints every day. The delicious porter is exported from the Dublin brewery to countless bars, pubs and restaurants all over the world. The tour and Gravity Bar in Dublin 8 is a must-do, even if you’re not a lover of stout.

Georgian Architecture

When you see a postcard from Dublin, it will inevitably contain some of our famous Georgian doors and buildings. Dublin is the home of some of the finest surviving examples of Georgian architecture in the world, many of which are still in use today as government offices. Some of the most important architectural buildings in the city are The Custom House, the Four Courts, the Rotunda Hospital (Europe’s first maternity hospital built in 1750), Leinster House and the Phoenix Park which was also established during this period. Stroll along Baggot Street in the city to witness the iconic and colourful Georgian doors.

Pub Culture

Did you know that Dublin has over 1000 pubs? Or that there is only one way to cross the city without passing a pub? Dublin and Ireland are well known for being the home of Craic agus Ceol – or fun and music to non-Gaelic speakers – a lot of which is found in the humble Dublin pub. Pubs are at the centre of Dublin life for better or worse. They are places that inspired our famous poets & authors and places where locals go to celebrate and to mourn. Don’t be shy in an Irish pub, there is often live music to sing along with and plenty of locals ready to tell you stories of times gone by.

UNESCO City of Literature

Another little-known fact about Dublin is that we are one of only 6 cities given UNESCO City of Literature status. We are proud to have produced four Nobel prize winners (Yeats, Beckett, Shaw, and Heaney) and numerous other unaccredited authors, poets, and playwrights who are known all over the world as Dubs. That’s not to mention the scores of graduates from our excellent universities like UCD and Trinity College. We are proud of the talent we have helped to inspire in many disciplines, from literature & musicians to scientists & explorers.

Dublin is a Friendly & Progressive city

Once voted the sixth friendliest city in the world, you just have to strike up a conversation with a local in a pub or on a bus and you’ll see why we are so popular. Dubliners have a very special welcome for visitors, which we call the céad míle fáilte (hundred thousand welcomes). We’re always happy to help with directions, recommendations for places to visit and most of us still thank the bus driver once we alight, a typical example of our warmth. We are also a progressive country, paving the way for other cities. We were the first country in the world to legalise gay marriage by popular vote and are hoping our forward-thinking rubs off on our visitors!
