What is King’s Day?
King’s Day is a national holiday in The Netherlands. It takes place on 27ème April, marking King Willem-Alexander’s birthday. The celebration is nationwide, and the biggest parties happen in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The celebration starts the night before with people kitting themselves in Orange and hitting the streets, bars and parks for a day of festivities and fun. Even the royal family comes out to celebrate with Dutch citizens. This year, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima, their daughters, and some of the extended family will travel to Emmen for the day. There will be speeches, live music and dancing and some traditional ceremonies to mark the occasion.

In Rotterdam, it is business as usual on this special day meaning you can spend your day enjoying retail therapy or grabbing some groceries for dinner. shops in Rotterdam Centre are open for their regular hours on 27ème April, meaning they usually open around 9 or 10 am. Of course, some exceptions may apply so check the details of your favourite shop before you visit.
One of the best things about Kings Day in Rotterdam is the flea market. For the ultimate nostalgic feeling and a great way to make friends and money, take yourself to the city centre and sell some unwanted items. From Schouwburgplein to Eendrachtsplein businesses, groups and individuals set up shop and bargain-hungry customers browse their belongings looking for something special. Kings Day festivals in Rotterdam
The city comes alive with parties and celebrations of all shapes and sizes on Kings Day. It’s a national holiday to celebrate King Willem-Alexander’s birthday with lots of music, dancing, flea markets and fun fairs. Every year there are parties planned with music, drinks, fun and food all day long. As always, you celebrate the Kralingse Bos Festival in the Kralingse Bos. For euphoric rave, rattling techno and hypersonic house, go to Oranjebitter in the Roel Langerakpark. There will also be a lot of parties and festivals in other places in the city. Enjoy Stadhuisplein, Kingsland in the Zuiderpark, Kroonjuweel in the Keilecafé and a great party in the Garden of Bird. The parties are often unorganised and unticketed and everyone is welcome to join in.
Parents should be aware that lots of people enjoy a drink on King’s Day and it might become a little messy by evening!
