Where to eat typical Dutch Pancakes in Rotterdam!

Pancakes are not simply a type of food in The Netherlands, they are a way of life! We eat them more regularly than just at breakfast. They make up part of a savoury meal, a snack or a sweet dessert, at any time of the day. Traditionally these tasty pan-fried cakes are topped with sugar, or a sweet apple syrup called stroop but there are dozens of varieties and each family prefers them a different way. Making traditional Dutch pancakes is easy especially when you stay with PREMIER SUITES Rotterdam where you have a fully equipped kitchen! If you want to try some of the best pancakes in Rotterdam made by professionals, here are some of our favourites.

Poffertjes or Pannekoeken

Depending on where you live, you’d be forgiven for thinking Poffertjes and Pannekoeken are the same thing but there are some differences that Dutch people know. Pannenkoekens are a cross between American pancakes and French crepes. They’re quite large and can be eaten sweet or savoury. You can eat them with sugar and stroop or with bacon and cheese, or anything you like really. They can be eaten flat on a plate or rolled up to make them easier to handle.

Poffertjes are more like mini pancakes and are usually eaten as a treat or as dessert. They are often served with butter and powdered sugar. For more of an elaborate treat, they can be flavoured with liqueurs or topped with fruit and fresh whipped cream. They are best served hot straight from the pan allowing the butter and sugar to melt together but whatever way you prefer them they’re always delicious. You’ll often find a poffertjes stand at the weekly markets in the city but there are also permanent locations.

Dutch Diner

A popular place for lunch and dinner Dutch Diner is exactly what it says. It’s a place to eat and drink in a casual atmosphere, enjoying some true Dutch classics. No Dutch restaurant would be complete without pancakes of some description and Dutch Diner has some of the freshest in town. They have a nice patio area and if the weather is good it’s a great spot for a snack and some people watching. It’s about 10 10-minute’ walk from our serviced apartments in Rotterdam and worth the visit for the food and to sample their version of pancakes.
